Cybersecurity

Overview

In 2019, SRI received a grant from the U.S. Embassy Nairobi to implement the 5Ws of Cybersecurity project. It supports the Embassy’s strategic goal of strengthening capacity to prevent and respond to threats of crime, to counter violent extremism, and to contribute to regional peace and security, particularly targeting at-risk youth. The project will also demonstrate how cybersecurity impacts a nation’s state of health, economic prosperity, and democratic space.

To implement the project, SRI administered a pre-training assessment, designed a curriculum for a one-day knowledge enhancement training, conducted workshops at the American Space (Moi University), held a public speaker series, held an essay contest, and implemented a social media campaign. The project was completed in September 2021. For those unable to attend the physical training , have a look at these free resources: https://www.sochininstitute.org/news/2020/5/5/cybersecurity-online-courses.

Essay Contest

We received over 50 entries for the essay contest and the competition was tough. It is important to note that we received some excellent submissions though we had to disqualify essays that substantially exceeded the 500-word limit. This was done to create an equal and fair playing ground for all. Thanks to everyone who submitted work and congratulations to the winners.

Research

The research note entitled “Using Cybersecurity As A Tool To Empower Women” explains the importance of conducting a pre and post-training assessment for participants in order to assess their aptitude and design the curriculum. Furthermore, the quantitative and cluster analysis reveals that women are just as capable in the cybersecurity field as men.

Results

517 individuals were trained and a 40 per cent learning effect was achieved. Participants comprised both students and professionals from the following organizations:
