COVID-19 Research Response

We are currently pursuing funding opportunities for research related to the COVID-19 pandemic unfolding in East Africa. Areas of particular interest/expertise include:

  • Education (assessing virtual learning and educational inequality)

  • Poverty trap (assessing the impact of the pandemic on female-headed households living in informal settlements)

  • Labor market (assessing the impact of the pandemic on employment opportunities amongst Kenya’s vulnerable youth)

Our preferred research methodology includes remote data collection through surveys and virtual key informant interviews, coupled with rigorous statistical analysis.

Over 100 Cyber Security Enthusiasts Graduate from Inaugural Training

The first month of delivering the 5Ws of Cyber Security training, which is funded by the U.S. Embassy Nairobi, was a huge success. 112 participants were trained at both the Embassy and the American Space Moi University. The February cohort comprised students from nearly all universities in Nairobi, along with professionals from the corporate world, NGO sector and public sector.

Organizations that were represented include: Centum Investment, Laikipia County Government, Sanlam, Jamii Bora Bank, ICT Ministry, Nandi County Government, the Capital Markets Authority, Nairobi County Government, UN Habitat, Silensec, Kenya Institute of Supplies Management, the Greenlife Foundation, KenGen, Tullow Oil, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Hass Petroleum, Blockchain Association of Kenya, Bitdefender, Janem Limited, Public Procurement Regulatory Authority, AMWIK/Old Mutual, African Advanced Level Telecommunications Institute, Samasource Ltd, Lapid Leaders Africa, and Disec Technologies.

5Ws of Cybersecurity

Over 225 respondents have completed our survey to be eligible for the cybersecurity training which we plan to launch end of November / beginning of December.

The results are quite fascinating with respondents doing well with scenario-based questions but faring not so well with definitions. One of the biggest revelations is that opinions are evenly split on whether or not Kenya has an existing Data Protection Bill.

Besides the two-day training, we will also launch a monthly speakers series. Both events will take place at the U.S. Embassy Nairobi.
